VELA chairs solve a problem that sits between a wheelchair and an ordinary chair, and it is a problem clinicians often do not have a name for. The client can stand and walk, but not for long, and not while doing anything else. They can manage a few steps. What they cannot do is stand at a bench and prepare a meal, or move between the sink, the hob and the fridge, or work at a desk and then reach a filing cabinet. Standing tolerance, not walking ability, is the limiting factor — and a wheelchair is the wrong answer, because it removes the standing they still have and puts them at the wrong height for every work surface in the room. A VELA chair keeps them seated at working height and lets them move while seated, with a braked castor base that locks when they push up and releases when they want to travel. The braking is the critical part: a chair on free castors is a fall waiting to happen at the moment of standing, and a chair that will not move is just a chair. That combination is what makes it a genuine participation intervention. It restores kitchen use, workplace tasks, hobbies at a bench, and personal care at a basin — activities lost not because the client cannot do them, but because they cannot stand long enough to. For a funding submission, the argument to make is task-specific and measurable: name the activities the client cannot currently complete, name the standing tolerance that limits them, and state what the chair restores. That is considerably stronger than describing it as a supportive chair. Check the seat height range against the client's actual bench and desk heights, and check the base footprint against the space they need to work in.
