Pouring a full kettle is a deceptively demanding task. It requires gripping a handle, taking the weight of one to two kilograms at arm's length, and controlling a tilt with a wrist and shoulder while directing boiling water accurately — all at once. For a client with reduced grip strength, a tremor, arthritis, upper limb weakness, hemiplegia, or fatigue from a progressive condition, it is frequently the single task that ends independent hot drink making. The consequences of getting it wrong are scalds, which are among the more serious kitchen injuries. A kettle tipper removes the lifting and the balancing. The kettle sits in a cradle and is tipped through a lever action — the client controls the pour without ever taking the weight, and the water path is fixed rather than depending on their aim. The reason this belongs in a support plan rather than being treated as a kitchen gadget is what it protects. Making a cup of tea is a small task with disproportionate significance: it is often the last piece of independent self-care a client retains, it is the thing they offer a visitor, and losing it means either a carer visit scheduled around it or the client going without fluids. Dehydration in older adults is a genuine and expensive downstream problem — it drives falls, confusion, urinary tract infection and hospital admission — and reduced fluid intake because getting a drink became too hard is a real pathway into it.
