The clinically important word on any waterproof protector is the second one: **breathable**. A plain waterproof backing — the plastic-feeling kind — stops fluid reaching the mattress and also stops water vapour leaving the skin. Heat and moisture build up underneath. Skin that is warm and damp macerates, loses tensile strength and breaks down at pressures it would otherwise tolerate. A non-breathable protector on a client at pressure risk can create the problem it was bought to prevent, which is why the cheapest option here is frequently the wrong one. The Miracle Layer is waterproof and vapour permeable, so fluid is blocked while moisture vapour passes through. Tencel adds to that: it is a highly absorbent cellulosic fibre that moves moisture away from the skin surface, which keeps the interface drier than a cotton or polyester face would. That combination is what makes it appropriate for a client at pressure risk rather than only for protecting furniture. Two checks before quoting. First, compatibility with the surface underneath — any layer that cannot stretch will hammock across a pressure-redistributing mattress and hold the client up rather than letting them immerse, which is the whole mechanism the mattress relies on. Use one layer only, and keep it flat; a wrinkle under the sacrum is a concentrated pressure point. Second, be clear about what the client actually needs. A protector manages moisture at the mattress interface. It does not manage continence — where fluid volume is significant, an absorbent washable underpad belongs in the plan alongside it, not instead of it.
