**Read the two weight figures carefully — they are not the same number.** Stiegelmeyer publish a **safe working load of 225 kg** and, separately, a **maximum patient weight of 185–210 kg** depending on configuration. The 225 kg figure includes the mattress, side rails and any accessories. Size against the patient figure, not the headline one, and confirm which configuration you are quoting. **Height range 15–80 cm**, and both ends of that range do a job. At **15 cm** the bed sits essentially at floor level. This is the fall-injury strategy: rather than restraining a resident who mobilises unpredictably, you reduce the fall distance. It also reduces the risk of a limb becoming entrapped beneath the bed. Castors lock automatically in the lowest position. At **80 cm** the carer works at an ergonomic height rather than stooping. Beds that stop at 70 cm are a recurring cause of carer back injury. **Ground clearance for hoist access is only available above the lowest position** — the bed cannot be at floor level and have a hoist underneath at the same time. Worth knowing before pairing it with a floor lifter. **Auto-regression: backrest 10 cm, thigh 4 cm.** This is the feature that matters most for skin integrity and the one most often overlooked. As the backrest raises, the section slides back to follow the body rather than compressing it forward. Without it, raising the head of the bed drags the skin over the sacrum — shear, which is the actual mechanism behind most sacral pressure injuries. **Modular Vario Safe side elements, exchangeable without tools.** The configuration is a clinical decision: - **110 cm side rail** — standard-compliant fall protection - **90 cm short element** — deliberately leaves a defined entry and exit point, so it works as a mobilisation aid rather than a barrier - **Pivoting side rail**, one-hand operated, 41 cm protective height (45 cm with telescopic extension), folding out of sight when not needed Being tool-free means the configuration can change as the resident's needs change, without a service call or a new bed. **Integrated length extension of 10 or 20 cm**, to 220 cm, with no additional parts — at the 20 cm setting the last slat swivels to close the gap in the base. A **width extension kit** takes the mattress surface from 90 cm to 100 cm without replacing the head and foot boards. Positioning: **backrest to 70°, thigh rest to 40°, Trendelenburg and reverse-Trendelenburg to 12°**, plus preset Fowler and cardiac-chair positions. 4-section metal slat base. **Out-of-Bed smart** is optional: a bed-exit notification that alerts if the resident does not return within a set window, adjustable from one second to 15 minutes, sent to the in-house call system. Aimed squarely at overnight hours when staffing is thinnest. Bed weight 140 kg on 50 mm double castors.
