From the manufacturer

Shower stools get treated as commodity items and prescribed casually. They are worth a moment of thought, because the wrong one causes falls. The U-shaped cutout at the front is the feature that matters here, and it is not about comfort. It gives access for perineal washing while the client stays seated. Without it, a client who cannot stand safely has to either rise to wash — the exact moment a shower fall happens — or forgo washing properly, which becomes a skin integrity and continence-management problem. Where a carer is assisting, the cutout also means they can reach without asking the client to stand or lean. The padded PU seat is doing more than adding comfort. A hard plastic seat concentrates pressure at the ischial tuberosities, and for a client who sits for a long shower — or who has reduced sensation and cannot feel it happening — that is a genuine, if brief, pressure load. Padding spreads it. What to check at assessment: • **Seat height against the client's knee height.** Too low and they cannot rise from it. This is the single most common error with shower stools. • **Whether a stool is enough, or a chair with a back and arms is needed.** A stool assumes the client has the trunk control to sit unsupported on a wet surface with no backrest. If they lean, they need a back. If they need to push up to stand, they need arms. • **Shower base size and the position of the fall.** The stool needs to sit level and clear of the fall of water, on a base with enough room for the client's feet and any carer. • **Non-slip feet condition** — these perish and are the part that fails.
