**A stool, not a chair — and that difference should be a decision, not a default.** A stool suits a client who can sit unsupported for the whole shower and who benefits from being able to reach around and behind themselves to wash without a backrest in the way. It gives better washing access and takes less room in a small shower recess. It is the wrong choice for anyone whose sitting balance is unreliable. Balance that seems adequate in a clinic can deteriorate in a hot, wet, slippery environment when the client is tired and reaching. **If there is any doubt, specify the shower chair instead** — the same frame with a backrest. **Safe working load 160 kg**, above the 136 kg typical of basic bathroom equipment. **Check the floor finish before relying on the suction feet.** Suction needs a smooth, non-porous, clean surface. Most modern bathrooms are deliberately tiled with a **textured anti-slip finish**, and suction will not seal on that, or on grout lines, mosaic tile, or a floor with soap residue. This is the most common reason a correctly chosen shower stool still slides. **S-bend side frame** takes the frame out around the hips instead of running straight down, so the client sits on the seat rather than between two rails. Height adjustable. **Set it so the feet are flat and the hips are level with or slightly above the knees.** Too low and the client cannot stand up from it unaided, which turns an independence aid into a call for help.
