**Check the bathroom floor before specifying anything on suction feet.** Suction cups need a smooth, non-porous, clean surface to seal against. Most modern Australian bathrooms are tiled with a **textured anti-slip finish** precisely because it is a wet area — and suction will not grip that reliably. Nor will it grip grout lines, mosaic tile, or a floor with any soap residue on it. This is the single most common reason a correctly prescribed shower chair still moves under a client. Look at the floor at assessment, and if the finish is textured, plan for a chair that gets its stability from geometry and weight rather than suction. **Safe working load 160 kg**, which is above the typical 136 kg of a basic shower chair and covers most clients without moving to the bariatric frame. **Chair, not stool — that is a clinical decision.** The backrest is there for clients who cannot maintain sitting balance unsupported for the length of a shower. Sitting balance often looks fine in a chair in a clinic and deteriorates in a warm, wet, slippery environment when someone is tired and reaching to wash. If in doubt, prescribe the backrest. **The S-bend side frame** widens the usable seat area by taking the frame out around the hips rather than running straight down. Practically, it means the client is not sitting between two rails. **Moulded seat with drainage holes** — water runs through rather than pooling under the client, which matters for skin maceration on anyone showering daily and sitting for extended periods. Height adjustable. **Set the seat so the feet are flat on the floor and the hips sit at or slightly above knee height.** Too low and the client cannot stand from it; too high and their feet dangle, which reduces stability and shifts load onto the back of the thighs.
