The number that matters on a pressure surface is its category rating, because that is what maps the equipment to the wound. The Alto Series 3 V4 is rated for prevention at very high risk and for treatment of pressure damage up to and including **category 4** — full-thickness tissue loss with exposed bone, tendon or muscle. That puts it at the top of the range and makes it appropriate where a wound already exists, not just where risk is high. Getting this mapping right in a submission is the whole game. A surface rated to category 2 used on a category 3 wound is under-treatment; a category 4 surface for a low-risk client is over-specification, and both are answerable. The cell design is a hybrid rather than pure alternation. The upper cell section alternates to deliver dynamic pressure therapy; the lower section stays static to hold the client stable underneath. That combination is what keeps the surface usable — a fully alternating mattress can feel unstable and disturb sleep, and instability is a real problem for a client with poor trunk control or anxiety about being moved. The cover is doing specific work too. It is a bi-elastic PU/polyester coated fabric, vapour permeable, with elastic properties that allow interface movement. That second property is the shear control: a stiff, non-stretch cover hammocks under the body and transmits shear straight into the sacral skin as the client moves or the bed head is raised. A cover that moves with the client reduces that. Vapour permeability handles the other half of the problem — skin that stays warm and moist breaks down at lower pressures than dry skin. The pump is fully digital with clear weight settings and alternating cycle settings. Set the weight correctly and check it at every review; the most common failure in the community is a pump left on the previous client's setting, which either bottoms the client out or holds them too high to immerse. Capacity is 175 kg. Where the client is at lower risk, the FIKA foam mattress covers up to category 2 with no pump to fail.
