Continence management and pressure care are usually treated as two separate problems. They are not, and this is the product where that connection matters. Skin that stays wet macerates. Macerated skin has reduced tensile strength, a compromised barrier, and breaks down at pressures it would otherwise tolerate. Prolonged exposure to urine or faeces also causes moisture-associated skin damage in its own right — a distinct condition from pressure injury, frequently misdiagnosed as one, and treated wrongly as a result. Where a client is incontinent and at pressure risk, moisture management is part of the pressure-injury plan, not a separate housekeeping matter. A washable absorbent protector wicks fluid away from the skin into the layers below and holds it there. Reusable rather than disposable also means it can be specified once rather than becoming an ongoing consumable cost in a support plan. One thing to check, and it is important. Any layer between the client and a pressure-redistributing mattress can compromise it. A protector that does not stretch will hammock across the surface, holding the client up rather than letting them immerse into it — and immersion is the entire mechanism by which a pressure mattress works. A stiff protector over an expensive mattress can quietly cancel most of what was paid for. Check the protector is compatible with the specific surface, use only one layer, and keep it flat and unwrinkled: a fold under a sacrum is a concentrated pressure point. Available across absorbency levels — match it to the actual volume rather than defaulting to the highest, since heavier layers are warmer and heat also raises skin vulnerability.
