Heat is the most consistently underweighted factor in pressure care, and this unit exists to address it directly. The mechanism is straightforward and well established. As skin temperature rises, tissue metabolic demand increases — roughly ten percent for each degree Celsius. That means warmer tissue needs more blood flow at exactly the moment that pressure is restricting it. At the same time, heat drives sweating, and moisture macerates the stratum corneum, reducing its tensile strength and its barrier function. The combined effect is that skin under a warm, damp interface breaks down at a lower pressure, and faster, than skin under a cool dry one. This is why an otherwise well-specified pressure mattress can still fail on a client who sweats heavily, has a fever, is in a hot climate, or is nursed under layers of bedding. Redistribution alone does not address the microclimate. An active heat management system moves air through or across the support surface to carry heat and moisture vapour away from the skin, rather than relying on the passive vapour permeability of a cover. The clients where this earns its place are recognisable: heavy perspiration, a history of breakdown despite an appropriate surface, a bariatric client where skin folds trap heat and moisture, or anyone whose skin is persistently damp at the interface. One note on specification: a microclimate unit is an addition to a pressure-redistributing surface, not a substitute for one. It manages heat and moisture; it does not manage load. Both problems have to be addressed for the plan to hold. Confirm compatibility with the specific mattress, power requirements, noise level and consumable costs before quoting.
