The Hybrid is gel over foam, and that combination is the standard answer to the central problem in cushion selection. The problem is that the two things a cushion has to do pull against each other. Pressure management wants a soft, conforming surface the client sinks into, so load spreads over a large contact area. Postural stability wants a firm base that holds the pelvis in a defined position and gives something to push off from during a transfer. A pure gel or air cushion is good at the first and poor at the second; a pure foam cushion is the reverse. A hybrid puts a foam base underneath for stability and a gel layer on top for conformity and pressure distribution over the ischial tuberosities. That is why hybrids are the most commonly prescribed cushion type — not because they are best at either job, but because they are adequate at both, which is what most clients need. Blake Medical indicate the Hybrid for prevention and treatment of **stage 1–2 pressure injuries** and users at **moderate** risk of skin breakdown, with moderate postural support. That ceiling is the thing to check against your client. A client with a stage 3 or 4 wound, or at high or very high risk, needs an air or hybrid-air cushion; this one is not rated for it. Published figures: 3.5" thick with a 270 lb (approximately 122 kg) capacity, available in standard, bariatric, paediatric and custom sizes, in flat or contoured shape. The cover is breathable with a non-slip base and a zip closure. Two practical notes. Choose contoured over flat where the client needs help maintaining pelvic position; choose flat where they self-propel and need freedom to move. And check the cushion thickness against the chair's seat-to-floor height — 3.5" raises the client, which can put their feet off the footplates or their knees under a table they previously fitted beneath.
