Equagel General Cushion

270Kg

EquaGel is made from a dry-polymer gel arranged in a series of columns. - As pressure is placed on the cell wall, it gently collapses, allowing the user's body weight to be distributed across a greater surface. - As well as the postural support, the open structure of the EquaGel cushion makes it significantly cooler than many other support cushions. - The EguaGel range includes the General support cushion that features mild contouring for everyday use, and the Protector cushion that has deeper postural support and is intended for users who need moderate to high postural support. - For users with specific support needs, there is also the Adjustable Protector which comes with removable pelvic contour inserts. - All EquaGel cushions come with breathable, water-resistant and multi-stretch covers. - Featuring velcro straps for wheelchair attachment, these cushions are long-lasting, low maintenance and easy to use.

From the manufacturer

EquaGel works on a different principle from every other gel cushion, and the difference is genuinely mechanical rather than marketing. A conventional gel pad is a sealed bladder. Load displaces the gel sideways, which works until the gel migrates away from the loaded point — at which stage the client is sitting on the cushion base and the cushion has stopped working. That migration is why gel pads need regular checking and why they eventually fail under a bony pelvis. EquaGel is a matrix of dry-polymer gel arranged in columns. Under load, the columns buckle rather than the material flowing away. Each buckled column stops resisting at the loaded point while its neighbouring walls continue to support the surrounding tissue. The effect is that the cushion relieves pressure directly under a bony prominence while still holding up the tissue around it — which is exactly the load pattern you want over an ischial tuberosity or a coccyx. Two secondary properties follow from the open structure. Air moves freely through the gaps between columns, so heat and moisture do not accumulate the way they do under a sealed gel bladder or a closed-cell foam — and warm, damp skin breaks down at lower pressures than dry skin. And because there is no foam core to absorb fluid, the cushion can be washed outright rather than only wiped, which matters for a client with incontinence. The trade-offs are honest ones. Gel cushions are heavier than foam, which affects anyone lifting a chair into a car. And a column-buckling surface offers less lateral pelvic stability than a contoured foam base, so a client who needs postural control as well as pressure relief may need a contoured version or a hybrid instead.
