**It works at two levels, and the pump is what separates them:** - **Without the pump** — suitable on its own for patients at lower risk, up to **category 2** pressure injuries - **With the pump added** — prevention and treatment up to **category 3 and 4** That matters when specifying. Don't rule the Aria+ out for a patient with an established deep wound because it looks like an entry-level surface — with the control unit it is rated for the most serious categories. Equally, don't assume a quoted Aria+ includes the pump. **Confirm which configuration is on the quote**, because it determines what the surface is clinically capable of. It also means the surface can be **stepped up in place** as skin deteriorates, and stepped back down as it heals, without swapping the mattress and transferring a patient who is already unwell. **Air cells respond to movement rather than running only a fixed cycle.** The cells react as the patient repositions, redistributing load to equalise pressure across the contact area. For a patient who still moves in bed, that is working with them rather than against them. **Unpowered, it keeps functioning.** A pure air system deflates toward the bed platform when power is lost or the pump fails. Because the Aria+ has a defined unpowered capability, a pump failure overnight leaves the patient on a surface still rated to category 2 rather than on the bed base. In a home with unreliable power, or where a fault might not be noticed until morning, that is a real safety margin. **Reassess as status changes.** Pressure risk moves with mobility, nutrition, continence and acute illness. A configuration that was right on admission may not be right three weeks later — and here the change is adding or removing a pump rather than replacing the bed surface. **No safe working load is published on our record.** For a patient near the upper end of typical weight, confirm it with the supplier before specifying. **Practical point for a home setting:** if the pump is part of the prescription, check a power point is reachable from the bed head and that someone will notice if it stops.
