The R90 is a rear-mounted push device, and its defining feature for prescription is that it does the propulsive work while the client keeps steering through the handrims. Sunrise Medical's selection guidance lists it as suitable across impaired, moderate and high upper limb strength — the broadest strength range in the Empulse family — because the motor supplies the push. Hand function still needs to be moderate to high to manage the handrims and the speed controller. That combination makes it the usual answer for a client whose shoulders are the limiting factor rather than their hands. Repetitive manual propulsion is a well-documented contributor to rotator cuff and biceps tendon pathology in long-term wheelchair users, and preserving shoulder function is a legitimate and fundable clinical goal in its own right — not just a comfort argument. Range is the longest in the range at up to 31 km, which supports genuine community distance rather than short trips. Weight is from 6.6 kg, the lightest of the Empulse devices, so removal and stowage is realistic for most users. Two speed settings, 6 or 9 kph, on an 8" wheel. Intended for indoor and urban use.
We aim to make our range as accessible as possible. Some products may not be available in all areas — please contact BMS Plus to confirm availability and discuss suitable options.
