A bariatric manual wheelchair has to solve two problems at once, and most compromise on one of them. The first is structural — the frame, axles and cross-brace have to carry the load without flexing, and flex in a folding bariatric chair is what causes the folding mechanism to bind and eventually fail. Cobi Rehab's answer is a lightweight frame with a rigid folding mechanism, which is the specific claim to test on trial: fold and unfold it loaded, not empty. The second is dimensional. The seat has to be wide enough that the client is not compressed at the greater trochanters, but every millimetre of seat width becomes overall width, and overall width determines whether the chair passes through the client's own bathroom door. A chair the client fits but the house does not is a common and expensive failure. The Minimaxx comes in three seat widths — 610, 660 and 710 mm. Measure the narrowest doorway, the bathroom turning space and the vehicle access before choosing, not after. Safe working load is 325 kg, which is high for a folding chair and is the main reason to specify this model over a rigid bariatric frame: it makes vehicle transport and storage realistic. Three things to attend to at assessment. The low seat height assists access and transfers — useful, but check it does not put the client's knees above their hips, which drives the pelvis into a posterior tilt. The balance point is adjustable, which matters because a bariatric client's centre of mass sits further forward and rearward stability has to be set for them specifically. And if the client self-propels, seat widths at this scale force the shoulders well outside their efficient range, so consider whether a power-assist or attendant device belongs in the same submission. Height-adjustable push handles and removable arm and foot rests support carer handling and side transfers.
