The Bounder is built around rear-wheel drive, and that is the choice being made when it is prescribed. Rear-wheel drive tracks straight and stays composed at speed, because the driven wheels sit behind the centre of mass — the same reason it does not fishtail the way a mid-wheel base can when pushed hard. The trade-off is turning circle: the front of the base swings through an arc, so it needs more room indoors than a mid-wheel chair. If the client's day is mostly inside a small home, this is the wrong configuration. If it is driveways, unsealed ground, long distances and genuinely rough terrain, it is the right one. Construction is unusually heavy for a powerchair: 2.5" x 1.5" x 0.125" steel wall tubing, TIG welded, with gearless motors and high-output electronics. Independent suspension on the drive wheels keeps traction over uneven ground rather than letting a wheel lift and spin. A sliding dual Group 24 battery box gives long range and makes battery service straightforward — a real consideration over the chair's life, because battery access is a recurring maintenance cost. Rated capacity is 136 kg. Note that 21st Century Scientific's US listings quote a higher figure against the 300 model, so the Australian configuration Cubro supply is not identical to the US one. Use the 136 kg figure for an Australian submission and confirm it with Cubro in writing if the client's weight is anywhere near it; where more capacity is needed, the Bounder 450 is rated to 204 kg and the Big Bounder to 450 kg. As a heavy steel chair, transport is a genuine constraint — check vehicle hoist and ramp capacity against the combined client-plus-chair weight before quoting.
