Falls in the home cluster in predictable places, and the wet or transitional floor is near the top of the list — bathroom, kitchen, laundry, and the strip of floor just inside an external door. A non-slip mat raises the friction available at those points. For a client with reduced balance recovery, a shuffling gait, or a walking aid whose ferrules skid on wet tile, that friction is the margin between a stumble they correct and a fall they do not. The part that gets missed is that a mat can just as easily be the hazard. A loose mat on a hard floor is one of the most common trip mechanisms in the home, and a mat with a curling edge or one that slides under a walking frame is worse than no mat at all. So the assessment question is not whether to use a mat but whether *this* mat, on *this* floor, stays put: • Does the backing actually grip the client's specific floor surface? Vinyl, sealed tile, floorboards and polished concrete behave differently. • Do the edges lie flat, and will they still lie flat after washing? • Does a walking frame or wheelchair castor roll over it without catching or dragging it? • Can the client or their carer lift and wash it, and does it dry quickly enough to be used daily? One further point worth raising with the client. Rugs and mats already in the house are frequently a bigger falls risk than the absence of a new one. A home visit that adds a good mat but leaves three loose ones in the hallway has not reduced the risk much. Removing hazards is usually the higher-value half of that intervention. Confirm sizes, backing type and washing instructions with the supplier before quoting.
