A fully encased protector is a different product from a fitted one, and the difference is the zip. A fitted protector covers the top surface. An encased one seals the whole mattress — top, sides and base — so nothing gets in and nothing gets out. That matters in two situations. The first is allergen control. Dust mite allergen is a well-established trigger in asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis, and mattresses are the main household reservoir. A fitted cover leaves the sides and base exposed and allergen continues to circulate. Full encasement with a sealed zip creates an actual barrier, which is why it is the form specified in allergen-avoidance advice. Where a client's respiratory or skin condition is part of their support plan, this is a clinical intervention rather than bedding. The second is fluid. A client with incontinence or wound exudate will eventually breach a top-only protector at the sides. Once fluid reaches the mattress core it cannot be cleaned out, and the mattress — often an expensive prescribed pressure surface — is contaminated. Encasement protects the asset, which is a straightforward cost argument in a submission. The Miracle Layer is waterproof and breathable, and the breathable half matters clinically. A plastic-backed waterproof layer traps heat and moisture against the skin. Warm, damp skin macerates and breaks down at lower pressures than dry skin, so a non-breathable protector can create the problem it was bought to prevent. One caution: check the protector is compatible with the pressure mattress underneath. A layer that will not stretch hammocks across the surface and stops the client immersing into it, which is the mechanism the mattress relies on. Use one layer, keep it flat, and confirm the fit before quoting.
